THE «PARIS» NOVELS BY AUGUST STRINDBERG AND HENRY MILLER

This article is an expanded version of the lecture given at the 30-th International Scientific Conference at the Department of Philology of St. Petersburg State University in March, 2003. The article deals with the perception of Paris by two prominent writers: the Swedish August Strindberg and the American Henry Miller. The comparative study presented is devoted to the two major works by each, which were created and what’s more important are set in «the nineteenth century’s capital». Novels «Inferno» and «The Tropic of Cancer» are being analyzed in matters of their similarities and differences. Certain parallels are drawn between the two works. Strindberg’s influence on Miller is treated as a matter of style and views on a variety of existential aspects touched upon in the novels by both.
