VOONDEL’S ODE «THE RHINE» AND ITS RUSSIAN TRANSLATION

The article deals upon the Russian translation of Vondel’s ode «De Rijnstroom» by E. V. Vitkovsky. E. V. Vitkovsky is the most famous and brilliant translator of the Dutch poetry into Russian who started his activities in the1970-ies. The article analyses the perfect translation of the first strophe of «De Rijnstroom» and the less perfect translation of the fourth + fifths strophe of the ode. The general impression of the translation is verified by the arithmetical analysis suggested by M. L. Gasparov which shows that the 1st strophe is really exactly translated, while the «precision index» of the 4th + 5th strophe is not so high. In general, the factual contents of the original is translated very well, but Vondel’s typical baroque stylistics got lost. Vitkovky’s versification is ideal, the archaic Russian of his translation is rich and beautiful, but a rhymed and rhythmic translation can never be absolutely exact.
