HISTORICAL TRAGEDY IN HENRIK IBSEN’S EARLY WORKS

Tragic genre is of principal importance in Ibsens writings. Historical tragedy was bis main interest in 1850-s, when the dramatist preferred historical material. This genre presupposes a conflict of a grand scale, demanding a struggle between different historical forces, epochs and social orders. The author of this article treats significance of this genre in Ibsens early works, making particular reference to The Vikings ai Helgeland (1857).
