Relations between the Norwegian playwright and Georg Brandes are often qualified as allied ones. However it would be wrong to think that the Danish critic shared the dramatist’s views in full measure and was able to comprehend and estimate at their true worth some of Ibsen’s most substantial aesthetic intentions. Georg and Edvard Brandes’ interpretation of A Doll’s House testifies that the playwright’s search for artistic means for “modem tragedy” was beyond the vistas of the both critics.
